Things to ask your kiddo, October 23rd edition

It was a good week, with lots of important work completed!
Grades are pretty well updated in Home Access Center, for you to check. Remember, we now only grade on a scale of 1-4, in order to match the state testing bands.

IMPORTANT: ALL 4th GRADERS NEED A PUMPKIN, ROUGHLY THE SIZE OF THEIR HEAD, AT SCHOOL BY THURSDAY 10/29/15, FOR 'PUMPKIN CAPERS"!

Things to ask your kiddo:

  • 4th and 5th: What joint project did you do in science? What question are you answering on your google slide?
  • Are you being a respectful and compassionate classmate?
  • Are you talking over your teacher during instruction, and making it difficult for all students to hear and understand the tasks?
  • What is a number talk? Can you make up one for me to do?
  • You have a lot of writing in your binder at school. What do you need to work on to become a better writer?
  • What special activities are happening next week for Red Ribbon Week?

Well, I wish this was what we saw each day...

Here are the weekly announcements:
  • 4th graders are selling See's Candy to support our field trip to Riley's Farm in March. If each child raises $50.00 the trip to the "Gold Rush Adventure" should be covered.
  • Both classes are participating in Socktober...please help your student collect new socks for homeless adults and children. We will be collecting them until October 23rd. Ask your friends and family to help out!
  • There is no school (for students) on Monday, October 12th!
  • Pumpkin capers is coming soon for the 4th grade!
  • Our conferences will begin the last week of October. Minimum days for students, however, are 11/2-11/6. Please make sure your child is picked up on time.
Please talk with your students about respectful behavior and personal responsibility. It is absolutely an on-going conversation in our home! It is not okay to keep chatting over an adult, or to tune out during instruction time, or talk back when a consequence is given.

Watch this space for sample math lessons!
Have a great week!

Things to ask your kiddo about school this week, October 2nd edition

Greetings, and Happy October!

I triple love the month of October, and can't wait to share it with your students!

Without further ado:

  • can they show you partial products (4th grade) and partial quotients (5th grade) in math. They should be able to demonstrate these cool strategies for solving multiplication and division problems.
  • What is Socktober? Who started it? Why? Are you participating? (Please do!)
  • What is a number talk? What do we do during that time?
  • What was required of them on their language arts Culminating task? What did they learn from it?
Have a wonderful weekend! Check back on Monday for the weekly announcements!
